Royals News/Notes- 8/1

Published by Sarah Davis

********Announcement************

I will be doing a week in review, and mix a preview of the next series with it instead of series previews.

The trade deadline has come and gone. For the Royals, it went quietly while it seemed that everyone around them seemed to improve the roster. Dayton Moore called a press conference about the days turn of events, and you can read what he said here: http://www.kansascity.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/ball-star/article842983.html

The long and short of what Moore said was this: It costs too much money, and we don't want to expand payroll. You can only take advantage of what's available to you. We feel that this group of players is talented, and there was no real significant upgrade.

You're telling me that Yoenis Cespedes isn't a significant upgrade over Nori Aoki? Sure, Cespedes doesn't play right field, but they could shift Cain over to play right, and stick him in center field. He's also telling me that James Shields is still a valuable asset to this team. James Shields has no value left for Kansas City. It's unlikely that the Royals make the playoffs, and Shields resigns, so why not get something in return?

Kansas City will face the Oakland A's this weekend. The A's had a very successful trade deadline day (unlike the Royals) when they acquired Jon Lester ad Johnny Gomes for Yoenis Cespedes. Pitching match ups (yikes) are Guthrie/Gray, Vargas/Lester, and Shields/Kazmir. I'll be honest- I don't like these pitching match-ups. Not because our pitchers can't handle battling against these starters, but because I don't think our hitters can handle these starters that all have a sub-3 ERA.

The Royals will play tonight at 8:35 central time, and look to keep rolling after a 5-2 home-stand. Kansas City took 3/4 from the Indians and 2/3 from the Twins. At the conclusion of yesterday's game, the team announced that Gold Glove first baseman, Eric Hosmer has fractured his hand after being hit with a Jon Lester fastball in Boston. Hosmer is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. They have not yet announced who will be taking Hosmer's roster spot. I will be updating accordingly when I get word.

It has been a frustrating week for the Royals and their fans, to say the least. Hopefully things will start to look up.
