Royals at Twins: Series Preview

Published by Sarah Davis

That was a very dreadful home stand.

The Royals escaped Kauffman Stadium by the skin of their teeth. After a 3-6 home stand, the team will look to bounce back on the road against Minnesota.

Game 1:
Danny Duffy (4-7, 2.69 ERA) vs. Yohan Pino (0-1, 6.30 ERA)

Danny Duffy has been rock solid for this Kansas City team. Duffy's 2.69 ERA leads the starting staff. None of the twins on the current roster really own Duffy, but the most at-bats anyone has against him is seven, which is not a large enough sample size.

I can say with a 100% certainty that Yohan Pino has never faced the Royals. This might be trouble for Kansas City, as they do not have a great track record of hitting rookies.

Game 2:

James Shields (8-3, 3.79 ERA) vs. Ricky Nolasco (4-6, 5.74 ERA)

James Shields has struggled his last few outings. Shields has not had a quality start since June 8th. Twins slugger, Joe Mauer, is 14-40 (.350) off of Shields in his career. Josh WIllingham also has considerable success as he is 8-25 (.320) off of 'Big Game' James.

Luckily for us, Ricky Nolasco has struggled more than James Shields has. Alcides Escobar is 5-9 (.556) against Ricky Nolasco. Omar Infante is 5-14 (.357) off of Nolasco. Nolasco has upwards of a 4.00 ERA at 3.95 in 2014.

Game 3:

Jason Vargas (7-3, 3.53 ERA) vs. Kevin Correia (4-9, 5.08 ERA)

Jason Vargas has proved to be very reliable for the Royals this year. While I had my doubts, this was one of the signings that I like from Dayton Moore.

Kevin Correia is another starter that has disappointing numbers for the Twins this season. Omar Infante, Lorenzo Cain, and Billy Butler all have considerable success against Kevin Correia.

Every Twins starter in this series has an ERA over 5.00. Though I feel that we have a good chance to sweep the Twins due to a considerable amount of success on the road this year, Kansas City is very cold right now, and I fully expect to lose two out of three.

Am I a Royals pessimist? Yeah, maybe. That's the thing with this team. Assume the worst, and then worry about it.
